Congratulations!

The Stella Adler Outreach Division provides free actor training to inner-city youth. In May the Stella Adler Studio of Acting started recruitment for the Outreach Division’s Summer Shakespeare program. In an effort to make access to this free program as democratic as possible, the Studio reaches far and wide into the New York City community to spread the word. With only 22 spots available for NYC teens and an extensive outreach process, every year the program gains more applicants and entry becomes more competitive.

This year there was a record number of 65 student applicants! As Director of Outreach Carlos Caldart pointed out, “All of the applicants deserve to be commended for their courage to call, come for an interview and return for an audition.” Congratulations to all of those who were accepted and to those who had the courage to apply!

Classes started on Tuesday, July 6th. Summer Shakespeare is an intensive program that requires the quick understanding and execution of new skills. Students are in the rehearsal hall for 50 hours over five weeks in July and August. While studying Voice and Speech, Physical Acting, Improvisation and Scene Study they are also rehearsing a Shakespeare play. At the end of the five weeks, students will perform the play to live audiences. They have their work cut out for them this summer!

The 2010 Summer Shakespeare ensemble hail from all five boroughs of New York City. This blog is devoted to tracking their growth and progress. Students are especially encouraged to leave comments describing their experience in the program. Please check in on a weekly basis to see what the 2010 Summer Shakespeare ensemble is up to!

  1. This first week was poppin!!... I've learned so much and its only been one week. In class Ive learned how to be emotionaly connected with your character and going beyond your comfort zones. Some of the exercises I felt were really weird, but I see that it helps me get in a deeper connection with my character.

  2. The first week I really enjoyed connecting with my talent that I had no idea was there. StellaAdler really shown me how talented I am and that I can do what it takes to become something greater then I thought. I would recommend this program to any teenager in the come up because they deserve the opportunity just like the rest of us.

  3. I did not know what to expect when i entered the program the first day. Now that the first week is over I'm very excited to continue not knowing what to expect! I have learned how to connect simple words and sentences to my body and make a big clear picture and trust me that was not easy for me at least. I know as the weeks go by i will learn soooo much. Oh and I like the people I have met so far.

  4. The first week so was great and very enjoyable. We are learning to not judge ourselves nor anybody else, ironically, we are playing other characters but we are learning so much about ourselves as we do. Also we observe that everyone is unique and will add their own style to a certain role. We are also learning speech and movement and it is very exciting because everybody is into it. I look forward to class and anyone who has the opportunity to take it should.

  5. I was waiting for this and I was very exciting. First week was fun and amazing. We were learning how to connect with each other, not to judge yourself about what you did on the stage. How to correct mistakes and do even better. People are very nice, warm and friendly.

  6. When the program first started i didn't know what to expect, I was so excited for it to start. The first week was so much fun and it was so helpful, Carlos has been teaching us how to accept our selves and not care what anyone else thinks. Besides the lessons every single person I've met is super nice, Carlos, Nina, Mike, and all students in both groups.

  7. This program so far has been a total help. Im learning how to do something without judging what i do and just be free and express myself. I've learned how to do things fully and im learning in a way that is quite different but very entertaining. I've made awsome new friends & feel very comfortable with everyone. I am thankful for the stella adler studio because now a days there aren't alot of programs like theese -with teachers like Carlos & mike that make us want to do better, make us feel comfortable to be silly & teach us the correct ways of acting in a fun & energetic way. In this program though, we don't just learn how to be better actors but better people in life aswell. I enjoy going everyday and can't wait to see how we all grow as better actors and actresses.

  8. Before coming to the first class this week I expected so much, but from the first exercise with Carlos I was forced to throw all of them out the window. So far the classes have been a unique experience and I'm being taught acting in an organic way that I've never experienced before. I can't wait for next week when we REALLY start in on Romeo & Juliet.

  10. Well, so far, it's been a week since I've started the program and all I could think of is "wow". I was expecting a lot of the program, but I received more. I've learned things such as creating meaning to simple words, I learned to be comfortable with what I do and also, in order for others not to judge me and what I do, I must not judge myself. The classes are so much fun and interesting and the people are just so friendly, and I just find it fascinating! I am very appreciative of my drama teacher for telling me about this program. I look forward to the days we have left. Now I'm sure that I will accomplish a lot because of the Stella Adler Program. =)

  11. The highlight of my day is coming to stella adler studio of acting. The people and all the talent the first couple of weeks was overwelming and amazing. I like how they challenge you to be more than what's expected. I embraced my role as lady capulet and it challenged me. I love stella adler and all the amazing people that make this program happen

When I thought Stella Adler acting comes to mind, but this program is more than just reading lines off of a script. It has has given me the oppurtunity to grow in places I did not imagine. This program has helped me discover attributes of myself that i will forever carry along as an actor. Before I came to this prgram I did not know if acting was fully for me, but now i am assured that acting will be my carrer path of choice. May God Always Bless the Stella Adler studio for acting

  13. My name is Lee and i'm a character in the play romeo and juliet in the stella adler summer outreach program and i have to say, i'm having fun and learning a lot. Being in the program has been a great experience. everyday has been pertinent to the developement of one's self, one's character, one's experience and the sheer implication of these developing in you as an actor or actress. the program shows us the basic of being known, being rigormotis on stage to make a point.the program gives your the opportunity to make a statement in your performance. i love the direction from out director tom. everyday i'm laughing in class because of how tom can in pursue of a point, scream at his top of his lungs to examplify the obidient anger kept in a man for his disobidient child, run in haste as shock as a 1000 volts to diveliver new of impossible odds and though it's funny everytime he direct in his method it always make a point of letting go to fully experiene every nook and cranny of this character which is teaching more and more to develope characters in my own mehtod. the great program being offered hear for free will only make people believe in what they do which an actor or actress must be able to do if they wish to act as i one day hope to achieve such details in characters and myselft. so great thanks to tom, carlos, nina, mike and all others hand in this free offering of such a great program. the learning experience leave me with hedonic stains on the being of myself as i habitually find that i'm seeing things never did i saw before. therfore, the stella adler outreach is a great resource to push you foward only as hard of a push you want. you too have to want to learn and be hear because of it's accredibility. the reason for this is that is smaller and more concerntrated for people who are serious because being in other plays the sheer commitment would lack solidity because of the abundance amount of casting which will inevitibly spew out the lack of dedication and show the immaturity of the people and work being done but stella adler makes sure to keep classes in good numbers to show the integrated focus on each person and this definitely gives people opportunity to grow as fast and as great as they want to be. so once again, thanks stella adler outreach program coordinators
